Recently I got a horsehide A-2 jacket from The Cockpit. (Picture above is not me, but you get the idea). I really like it, a new favorite. Horsehide can be a little tough when you first wear it and it takes a while to "break in." But there's no other leather like it.

Schott G-1

As a Christmas gift to myself, I got a good deal on a Schott G-1 jacket. A lot of Schott bomber jackets are pretty far from military-specs; you'll see all sorts of variations on the fur collars, the epaulets, multiple-piece leather backs, and so on. They look nice, but have a distinct look of their own. It seems harder to come across a more authentic looking A-2 or G-1 from Schott, but I managed to snag one.

Saboteur revisited

I posted a while back on the Alfred Hitchcock movie, Saboteur. I came across a posting over the blog Clothes on Film discussing the clothes the main character (played by the insanely handsome Robert Cummings) wore through a large part of the movie. His leather a-2 jacket was a key part of his appearance. The man is falsely accused, and on the run from the law. Does his leather bomber jacket contribute to his being perceived as a "bad guy?"

Considering the movie was filmed during WWII, I'm not entirely sure. The jacket had then, as it does now, strong associations with military service. Now, if he'd worn a motorcycle jacket like Marlon Brando, it might be a different story. Anyway, it's a great movie, so check it out if you haven't already!

Varsity Jackets / Blouson Teddy

I touched on this once before in an older post. It's a bit off-topic, but, I like to bring these jackets up from time to time. I'm talking about letter (or varsity) style jackets. I read once on a style forum that (to paraphrase) there are certain jackets every man should own: A leather A-2, a navy peacoat, and a varsity jacket. I couldn't agree more!

For my international readers, they have an iconic look about them, a "jock" style that hits something sexual with a lot of guys. While their appeal tends to be American-centric, I have seen them pop up in Europe, for example France where the the style is referred to as "blouson Teddy." I imagine this is in reference to the "Teddy boy" subculture of the U.K., though I can't be sure. (For some good European sources, visit Cuir-city.com, and La Canadienne)

I've also seen hockey players and university students in Canada wearing them, where they're often called "awards jackets." The Canadian leather company Roots always seems to have a version or two out.

Anyway, I can't get enough of them; I own a few myself, though I think adult men should avoid patches, numbers etc. - leave those things for your high school memories. My favorite is a plain yet classic black jacket with both black wool and black leather sleeves (similar to the picture below, yet without the patches on the arms). I have been thinking of getting a new one. How about my readers?

Hope everyone's having a great start to 2011! Winter's one of my favorite seasons as I've mentioned before on this blog. And one of the great benefits of it are all the leather jackets out this time of year.

This winter, for some reason, I've been seeing a lot of younger guys sporting leather bomber jackets. Not just the "fashion" styles that are inspired by the real thing, but actual A-2, G-1 and B-3 jackets, among other military styles.

Perhaps it's an isolated thing, or part of a larger trend. Either way, I think it's a great thing. Hope to see more...

First, my apologies to those who emailed me and didn't get much of a response. And also sorry for the long break in posting. Many things were going on, and I didn't have time to post like I've tried to in the past. I'd like this blog to continue to grow (think of it as a New Year's resolution). This blog gets a great amount of hits from around the world, which means there are interested people out there, so I will do my best.

Let's start things back off with a video I found on Youtube... Kind of long and it's in German, featuring a guy interviewing a leather jacket maker. At one point he tries on several models, including a nice looking Top Gun G-1 reproduction (around the 8 minute mark).

Making Men Hot One Jacket at a Time

The colder weather brings out the leather bomber jackets. One constant trend I've noticed though is that while some younger guys sport their A-2's, G-1's (or the knock-off fashion versions) the majority of guys who seem to own them are older.

I wonder if it's a generational thing. But I see consistently men who are mature from different generations wearing flight jackets (for example, men who would have grown up anywhere from the 50's to the 70's) so it makes me think that maybe there's something about growing older that makes flight jackets part of a "mature" wardrobe.

This is odd, because at least in the beginning leather flight jackets were designed for young pilots in the wars. Then, in the 1950's, they became the thing to year for young men (haven't you ever seen all the bomber jackets in "Rebel Without a Cause"). So then maybe bomber jackets become a way of re-capturing youth?

The reason doesn't matter one bit to me! What got me thinking about this was tonight at the grocery store I saw an amazingly hot older/mature man wearing a brown A-2 jacket. He had "salt and pepper" hair and blue eyes... we made eye contact several times, and while I can't be sure if there was anything to it, I thought the guy was hot enough I'd notice him even if he wasn't wearing a bomber jacket. But the leather jacket helped!

Thoughts About the Jackets

A comment from a reader got me thinking today about the aspects of fetish items in general. For example, there are many site out there devoted to the history and collection of leather flight jackets and other WWII-era memorabilia.

So I took a step back, and thought about the attraction to these jackets from a non-sexual view. I think over the years I've come to appreciate A-2s and G-1s as iconic items themselves. They have a unique place in our psyches, associating them as we do with pilots and all they stood for.

I also am of the opinion they are well-designed jackets. And just think about their longevity... how many other items came out of that era and are still seen on the streets regularly today*, besides perhaps blue jeans (and reoccurring fads such as fedoras)? The fact they are still around today speaks volumes for their practicality (I wear mine for pleasure as well as warmth and comfort) and their good looks.

*I add this note, as I have several friends and reader who admire the B-3 style jackets from that era. Didn't want to overlook them... I think it's great when I see a guy wearing one!

You know, sometimes I think of this site as like the SETI program. You know, the one where scientists scan the skies for signs of life out there in space.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no other site on the web for guys into leather flight jackets (please let me know if you know of any, though!). So I created this a few years ago, and since then I've been contacted by guys from various corners of the globe who share the same interest.

It's interesting. I still don't think it's a very common fetish - but for those who are into it, it's a strong feeling. Another thing I've noticed is that most guys claim they had an interest in leather flight jackets since they were very young. Maybe that's the way it it with most fetishes, though?

For me, I think it was a combination of seeing them on older guys as a boy, and the media - specifically movies I remember seeing like Top Gun, or WWII movies full of handsome lads in A-2 or G-1 jackets.

Just my thoughts for the day. If you're out these, feel free to leave a comment or drop me a line. It's always cool to know there are others out there... A faceless/anonymous pic modeling your jackets would be cool, too!

A few months back I snagged myself a brand new (or rather, unworn with tags) Cooper A-2 jacket. Cooper apparently is no longer in business, so these goatskin jackets are becoming rarer, though used versions pop up on Ebay every week.

They are not as authentic as say, some other flight jacket makers like Eastman, US Authentic, Gibson & Barnes etc., but they are a great "everyday" jacket - lightweight and great for wearing when the weather's chilly but not too cold. I tested mine out recently and it's great for a spring day.

I think a Cooper was actually one of the first A-2 jackets I ever owned (probably owing to its cheaper price and availability). I sold it off years ago on Ebay... only to buy another one on Ebay years later. Go figure.

I remember my first leather flight jacket - I got it when I was a teenager (16 I think). It was a brand-new Avirex G-1. It fit me a little big, but I grew into it. I wish I still had that bomber jacket, actually.

Flying Tigers Jacket

Last night it was unusually cold out for this time of year here, so I wore my LL Bean "Flying Tigers" jacket.

I know some A-2 enthusiasts who don't appreciate jackets that are inspired by the A-2, but lack the military specifications (like no side entry hand pockets etc.). I gotta say I love my LL Bean flight jacket. It's comfortable goatskin with a Thinsulate lining, and while it has the A-2 look, it's not as "stiff" - it's a great jacket for wearing out on a night on the town. It looks good with jeans or khakis, and can be worn to work or the bar. And mine (which I bought 3 years ago) has only gotten more comfortable with age, while still looking new and great (LL Bean does make good products in general). It's become like my favorite pair of jeans.

I'm not sure if the jackets currently being sold by LL Bean are exactly the same as mine (I hear they are no longer made in the USA) but based on the wear I've gotten out of mine (it'll probably hold up for life if I take care of it) I definitely recommend looking into one.

The last two posts about Indiana Jones got me thinking about movies with guys in flight jackets. Memphis Belle is a good one, so is Pearl Harbor, and of course Top Gun. One that I remember from the 80's in the original version of The Hitcher.

Basically actor C. Thomas Howell spends two hours running from and fighting a maniac hitch-hiker on the open road, while wearing an A-2 jacket. It's worth a watch for some great scenes, like when he gets arrested. I couldn't find any good clips, so here's a pic:

Yesterday on the street I saw this smokin HOT guy park his motorcycle. Besides being young, sandy blond, and generally a look looking guy all over - he was wearing a black A-2 jacket. I almost stopped dead in my tracks.

I really like their CWU-45P model, in black. It sort of reminds me of some of the black A-2 jackets out there (I know US Wings makes one). I've been thinking about buying an Alpha leather jacket next. The CWU-45P runs at around $200.

Woops! Until I got some great comments over the weekend, I didn't realize how long it had been since I last updated!! My apologies. - life just got in the way.
But now it is fall, the weather is getting colder which is great! It's the perfect time to break those leather jackets out of storage, and to see other good looking guys wearing them around too!

I recently got a new G-1 as well. A cheap Ebay find, but it was brand new with tags. It's an Avirex, which I understand is now going to be something of a collectors item, given that Avirex was bought out, and now makes the jackets under the label "The Cockpit." (see some Cockpit jackets here... not sure how they measure up, any comments?) By the way, over at U.S. Wings, flight jackets are 15% for the upcoming holidays. May buy myself another jacket, or of course you can buy one for me, ha!

Also, sort of related, I am a member of a male fetish oriented website called GearFetish. This site is great, if you are so inclined, I reccomend joining! There you can meet guys into all sorts of things: flight jackets, flight suits, football and sports gear, leather, you pretty much name it.

And now, a few words of A-2 jacket wisdom I found...

The Top Gun Issue

I've been neglecting this blog, and I apologize. Been busy with plenty of things, but decided today to start a discussion on my latest goal, getting a nice Top Gun style G-1 Flight Jacket.

The Avirex Cockpit G-1
Now that Avirex's flight jackets have become the "Cockpit" line, I'm not sure if I'm crazy about the new Top Gun Jacket, as opposed to the older style, which can still be found on Ebay occasionaly. Another place that sells this same jacket, perhaps a bit cheaper, is Gr8Gear's Avirex Top Gun. I'm not sure if I'm crazy about the distressed looking "antique lambskin" either. But what do you think?

I'm not sure where these are made, but there are some interesting looking Top Guns (their G-1 looks like the old Avirex exactly...) and their Flying Tigers jacket looks promising too, though the jackets may or may not be cheaply made. Any thoughts?

These all look really cool, but after emailing all the companies involved (Legendary Leathers, Ace Jackets, and American Mystique) it appears that the maker (Legendary Leathers) will not be making any more available until Fall of 2006. But all three of these websites sell the jackets, at varying prices, so do your homework. I for one am looking forward to buying one of their Flying Tigers G-1s or A-2s as soon as they become available.

Being the first entry, I want to explain the purpose of this blog. First and formost this will be a place for guys who are into leather flight jackets, or leather bomber jackets, whichever you prefer to call them, and possibly other flight jacket styles, such as nomex jackets.

Let's face it, there's a website for almost every fetish known to man, yet thus far I have't encountered one devoted to one of my favorite fetishes; a fetish for leather flight jackets. My bomber jacket fetish goes back as far as I can remember, so here is my blog on all things flight jackets!

The A-2 Jacket
I want to start off talking about the A-2 leather jacket. More information on it's background can be found here at a great website dealing with A-2s. In short, they are the Air Force's leather flight jacket, with a history going back to World War II. I personally have always found them to be incredibly sexy on guys.
